Saint John Southworth Catholic Academy Trust

School-Centred Initial Teacher Training

What is School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT)?

At the Saint John Southworth Enterprise & Research Alliance, we offer immersive, school-led teacher training programmes for both Primary and Secondary education. Our one-year courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with the option to obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

How Does It Work?

Throughout your training, you will spend the majority of your time in schools, learning directly from experienced teaching professionals. You'll gain hands-on experience in the classroom while benefiting from a robust support network of mentors, teachers, and peers, ensuring you feel confident and well-prepared.

Our training partners are the University of Roehampton and St Mary's University, where you will attend one day per week alongside other trainees, enriching your theoretical knowledge and reflective practice.

You will also have the opportunity to expand your experience by undertaking a short placement in one of the other schools within our partnership, broadening your understanding of different teaching environments.

Placement Types & Funding

Tuition Fee

Teacher training courses are £9,250 and there are a few options available to help to fund the costs such. For some subjects there are tax free bursaries and scholarships of up to £31,000 for qualifying individuals (see table below). Alternatively, there are Tuition Fees and Maintenance Loans. More information can be found on the Government website Get Into Teaching.

Salaried

There are some teacher training courses that come with a salary. The school pays for your QTS only training costs and you will receive a salary while you train. These placements are usually for individuals with some teaching experience and are highlight competitive.
